With so many options available you can mix and match styles and materials to find the perfect look for your staircase.

Ball—a ball newel cap is a solid wooden sphere which usually has a peg at the bottom that can be inserted into the newel post. To fit, simply drill a hole the same size as the peg, apply some adhesive and slot the peg into place.

What materials are available for newel caps?

As with newel posts, oak, hemlock and pine are among the most popular choices of material for newel caps and half newel caps.

At Jackson Woodturners, we offer oak, hemlock and pine newel caps and half newel caps either as wood, or wood combined with either chrome or brushed nickel elements.

Flat newel caps are also available in chrome and nickel for a super-sleek finish. However, they do attract fingerprints so need cleaning more often than wood newel caps.

You can paint, varnish or wax oak, hemlock or pine newel caps to match your existing newel post.

How do I attach a newel cap to my newel post?

If your newel cap has a peg, there should be a hole of the same diameter as the peg on the cap drilled into the newel post you’re attaching it to. If the fit is a little slack, use a small amount of wood glue to secure the cap in place.

If you’re fitting a cap over the top of the newel post (i.e. a pyramid or flat cap), you can glue this in place using a PVA wood glue. To stop the cap lifting off while the glue dries, secure it in place with a strip of masking tape.

What is the size of the peg on the newel cap?

On our 82mm and 90mm newel caps, the peg is 32mm in diameter.

What are newel caps?

Newel caps are placed on top of newel posts, which are the vertical supports found at the top and bottom of staircases. They act as a decorative finishing touch that enhances the look of the entire staircase and helps to protect the newel post from wear and tear.

What is a half newel cap?

A half newel cap is a type of newel cap that’s specifically designed to fit on top of a half newel post, which is a newel post that has been cut in half lengthwise so it can be installed flush against a wall. They’re commonly used when a handrail ends in a wall, such as on a landing.

What is a double newel cap?

A double newel cap, such as this pine double newel cap,  is specifically designed to cover two adjoining newel posts, typically where a staircase forms a corner or splits. This gives a much more finished appearance compared to having two separate newel posts.

How to care for and maintain newel caps?

To care for your newel caps and keep them in their best possible condition, regular cleaning with a soft, damp cloth is recommended. For wooden newel caps, wood polish or wax can be used to bring out the natural shine of the wood and enhance the look of the grain.

For metal newel caps, more frequent cleaning might be required to wipe away fingerprints and smudges. You can also apply a specialist metal cleaner using a soft cloth, rubbing it in using small circular motions. Buffing the surface will help to further enhance the shine.

Newel Caps FAQs

What is the purpose of a newel cap?

A newel cap has two key purposes: it adds a stylish decorative finish to the newel post, and it helps protect the newel post from wear and tear.

Are newel caps necessary for my staircase?

Newel caps are not an essential part of any staircase, because they don’t offer any structural support, and your staircase will still be structurally sound without newel caps. However, without newel caps, your newel posts will likely look unfinished, which can detract from the appearance of your beautiful new staircase.

Can I replace a newel cap without replacing the whole post?

Yes, you can replace a newel cap without replacing the whole newel post. This process simply involves removing the old newel cap, preparing the surface and then attaching the new newel cap. We have a detailed guide on replacing newel caps if you would like more information.

How do I choose the right size newel cap?

To choose the right size newel cap, you need to ensure that the cap is the same size as your newel post. The cap’s peg will need to fit securely into the top of the newel post, and the size of the newel cap will need to align with the size of your newel post. For example, if you have ordered a 90mm newel post, you will need a 90mm newel cap.

What's the difference between a newel cap and a finial?

A finial is a word for a type of newel cap. Typically, finials are highly decorative and ornate, such as acorn or ball caps, and are designed to make more of a statement than more modern flat newel caps
