Handrail Brackets FAQs
There are no official guidelines for how far apart handrail brackets should be, however we recommend having brackets no more than one metre apart.
Fitting enough brackets will ensure your staircase handrail is safe and secure. For a standard 3.6m handrail you’ll need four stair handrail brackets 1 metre apart, with a 30 cm gap from each end of the handrail to the first bracket.
For most handrails such as mopstick handrails, you can screw the handrail brackets straight onto the underside of the handrail as this is usually a flat surface. Once you’ve measured where the brackets should go on the handrail (see above), you can then screw the brackets in place. Most handrail brackets will come with screws provided.
The way that you attach your mopstick handrail will depend on the type of bracket that you use. Brackets such as the wall mounted mopstick handrail will allow you to slide the handrail into the bracket before attaching it to the wall.
You can install most handrail brackets by attaching them to the underside of the handrail first. Once the handrail is fixed, attach this to the wall using the screws provided.
We recommend measuring out the pitch of the staircase so that you can match this for the handrail, as well as measuring the height of the handrail before installing. You can make marks on the wall at each location that the bracket will be fixed to ensure you line this up correctly when screwing it in.
