Stair newel caps guide: What they are, the styles & how to fit them
Choosing a newel cap for your stairs can be a daunting task when you first start looking, however once you understand how they work and what style suits your staircase, it can be a breeze. In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about newel caps. So what are stair newel caps?
A stair newel cap is a topper that fits onto the top of a newel post. This provides a finishing touch to your balustrade and shows off your chosen design. They can be fitted by either inserting the peg on the cap into the newel post hole, or glueing a flat cap directly onto the top of the post.
Read on to find out more about what stair newel caps are, what the different styles are, what materials are available, and how to fit them.
What is a stair newel post cap?
Newel caps provide the perfect finishing touch to the newel post and can be simple or elaborate in design, depending on the overall look of the staircase. Newel caps can be made of wood, metal, or a fusion of both materials.
Replacing a newel cap is a simple and cost-effective way to instantly update your balustrade. It’s a job that most competent DIY-ers can do. To find out more, read our step by step guide to replacing a newel cap.
What are the different types of stair newel caps?
In general, turned newel caps for stairs (such as ball or acorn caps) tend to look better on turned posts. Alternatively, caps with a square base (such as pyramid or flat caps) look best on chamfered or square newel posts.
With so many options available you can mix and match styles and materials to find the perfect look for your staircase.
Ball Newel Caps
Ball newel caps, also called round newel caps, are solid wooden spheres which usually have a peg at the bottom that can be inserted into the newel post. To fit, simply drill a hole the same size as the peg, apply some adhesive and slot the peg into place.
The distinct tiger-stripe pattern on this oak ball newel cap makes it a beautiful addition to an oak balustrade.
Pyramid Newel Caps
These are typically found on modern balustrades and offer a clean and simple finish to square-topped newel posts. Double pyramid caps are also available, and are used where two newel posts are joined together or for double width newel posts.
This beautiful oak pyramid newel cap is ideal for adding the finishing touch to a contemporary newel post.
Modern
Newel caps for stairs that integrate metal into the design offer a modern touch to a newel post. Chrome or brushed nickel is usually combined with oak, pine or white primed wood for a sleek finish. Some stair part ranges feature solid metal newel caps, such as the Forge chrome flat newel cap in chrome for the ultimate modern look.
Flat Newel Caps
Flat newel caps are available in wood or metal and add a clean finish to the top of a newel post. They can usually be fitted with an adhesive and are available in either single or double styles for attaching to two newel posts that are joined together.
The 82mm pine flat newel cap is a great cost effective choice to complete a modern newel post.
Metal Newel Trims
Metal newel trims and connectors are another fantastic option for adding an element of detail or contrast to a newel post. These fit between a newel base and newel post.
This newel base connector from the Solution range is designed to be fitted onto a 90mm newel base.
The Immix range of stair parts features a decorative newel trim that clips around the newel base to add an eye-catching touch of gun metal to the white oak complete newel post.
What materials are available for newel caps?
As with newel posts, oak, hemlock and pine are among the most popular choices of material for stair newel caps and half newel caps. You can also paint, varnish or wax oak, hemlock or pine stair newel post caps to match your existing newel post.
At Jackson Woodturners, we offer oak, hemlock, and pine newel caps. We also provide half newel caps for stairs in wood or a combination of wood with either chrome or brushed nickel elements.
Flat newel caps are also available in chrome and nickel for a super-sleek finish. However, they do attract fingerprints so they will need cleaning more often than wood newel caps.

How is a newel post attached to stairs?
If your newel cap has a peg, there should be a hole the same diameter as the peg in the newel post you’re attaching it to. If the fit is a little slack, use a small amount of wood glue to secure the cap in place. The peg, or dowel, is always 50mm, so you don’t have to worry about getting the right size of peg.
If you’re fitting a cap over the top of the newel post (i.e. a pyramid or flat cap), you can glue this in place using a PVA wood glue. To stop the cap lifting off while the glue dries, secure it in place with a strip of masking tape.

What is the size of the peg on the newel cap?
On all of our 82mm and 90mm newel caps, the peg is 32mm in diameter, meaning you’ll have to use them on a newel post with a hole of the same diameter for it to fit.

Stair newel cap FAQs
How do you fit a chrome newel post cap?
A chrome stair newel post cap can be fitted like any other flat or pyramid cap. You can add glue to the inside of the newel post cap and place this firmly over the top of the newel post. As newel caps can sometimes shift and lift away while the glue dries, we recommend securing it into place with masking tape on each side of the cap until it’s secure.
What size post caps do I need?
The size of the newel cap that you need can depend on the size of your newel post, the space around your staircase, and the design style of the project. Caps come in 70, 82, 90, or 120mm.
How do you measure for a newel cap?
To measure for a newel post cap, simply measure the flat top of the newel post from side to side. This is measured in millimetres and should exactly match the size of the newel cap you buy for your stairs.
