"Glass Stair Panels" Frequently Asked Questions

Glass panels for staircases are normally between 8-10mm thick to ensure that it’s resistant against cracking or smashing and so that it provides a proper safety system. While 8mm may sound like it will be too thin, the glass used in glass staircase panels is tempered glass, ensuring that it’s strong and durable enough to withstand daily use.
Having a small gap between glass panels is essential, and installing your glass panels so that they touch should be avoided at all costs. This is because touching panels will result in unnecessary pressure on the glass because of the natural expansion and contraction of the glass as the temperature of the room changes.

The most common gap size when installing glass stair panels is at least 10mm. This allows for the glass stair panels to expand without touching each other and adding extra pressure to the glass. We recommend never installing panels closer than 5mm apart.
Because glass stair panels use tempered glass, they are considered extremely safe and you won’t need to worry about bumping or cracking them. The glass is usually 8mm to 10mm thick, which allows for a sturdy glass stair panel that will act as both structural and safety support.

Glass stair panels for staircases are toughened by subjecting the glass to an extreme heat of about 700°C. This process, known as quenching, creates a strong layer on either side of the glass to lock in the tension in its core. After this process, the glass is around four times stronger than before.
