FAQs

Why should I choose pine spindles for my staircase?

There are several reasons why pine is a great material choice for your stair parts and why we love it here at Jackson Woodturners:

  • Versatile: Pine is suitable for customisation with paint, stains, or varnishes.

  • Pale colour: Its light, natural appearance works particularly well with neutral decor.

  • Sustainable: Pine trees grow quickly and are considered one of the more sustainable material options for stair parts.

What’s the best way to finish pine spindles?

Pine is ideal for finishing with paint, stain, or varnish. However, it's important that you prepare your wood properly, no matter how you choose to finish it.

If you’re choosing to paint, you’ll need to use a knotting solution to make sure knots remain in place and the natural oils of the wood don’t seep through. If you’d like to change the colour of your pine, but still keep the natural grain appearance, stain is a great option.

You could even choose to keep the original colour of your spindles. We recommend applying Treatex Hardwax Oil to protect the wood and pine wood filler for any imperfections.

Why are pine stair parts cheaper than oak?

Pine trees grow quickly and can be planted in a variety of environments. This means they’re more readily available. Pine is also softer than oak and is not as durable, but it is still an affordable and attractive option.
