"Volute Handrails" Frequently Asked Questions
A volute is a decorative way to finish a handrail and is a more elegant alternative to a handrail endcap. The stair handrail volute is the curved part of the handrail that sits on a volute newel post or posts on top of a curtail step at the bottom of the stairs.
The term ‘volute’ refers to a spiral or scroll-shaped element often found in classical architecture. This shape may have been inspired by the curve of a ram’s horns.

It’s easy to determine if you need a right or left-hand volute handrail for your staircase. Simply stand at the bottom of your staircase and look up, the side that you want the decorative volute to be on is the one you should purchase. This should be the side of the staircase that is open rather than against a wall.
All of the volute handrails at Jackson Woodturners are supplied with up-ramps. An up-ramp is a section of wood that joins the volute with the rest of the handrail. It will need to be cut to size and joined to the end of the stair volute handrail using a dowel screw set.
A volute, turnout and starting easing are all different types of handrail fittings:
• A volute is the most decorative option and consists of a curved spiral. Volutes are the perfect choice for character homes, period properties or when you want your staircase to make a dramatic impact.
• A handrail turnout is a stylish fitting that curves to the side creating a bend. This is a less dramatic option than a volute.
• A starting easing is the simplest of these handrail fittings. It allows the handrail to seamlessly transition from the steep angle of the staircase to a horizontal connection with the newel post at the bottom of the stairs.

A volute newel post is designed to sit on a bullnose or curtail step at the bottom of the stairs. A volute handrail for stairs should sit on top of the volute newel post to create an elegant and continuous handrail. At Jackson Woodturners, we offer plain volute newel posts in oak or pine. We also stock Richard Burbidge volute newel posts in a fluted, classic or tulip style.
